If you’ve only heard of Elizabeth Holmes and never had the pleasure of being conned by her yourself, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get hustled by a whole lineup of master hustlers at once. This episode is about You Can See Everything, the “documentary” (air quotes very much intended) co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and produced by A24. In the last month before she went to prison, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans invited a film crew to move into their beachfront house in San Diego and film them around the clock.

We start with the founding of Theranos, The Wall Street Journal investigation, the price the whistleblowers paid, and Holmes’s relationship with Sunny Balwani. Then we get into the two completely different readings people come away with: is she a victim, controlled again and again by her intimate partners, or a master manipulator who managed to play even Nathan Fielder? We also talk about why the film became a Silicon Valley social event, Nathan Fielder’s “playing dumb” and the “autism defense,” the reality-TV and YouTube-style reaction camerawork, and how the film challenges the conventions of documentary.
